Individual psychoanalytic therapy recommended in new NICE/SCIE guidelines

A newly published ‘quick guide for practitioners and managers supporting children, young people and families’ from NICE/SCIE has recommended individual psychoanalytic therapy as a therapeutic intervention after abuse and neglect.

Individual psychoanalytic therapy is specifically recommended for girls aged 6 – 14 as an intervention after sexual abuse where they are showing emotional or behavioural disturbance. The guidance recommends up to 30 individual sessions and also separate support sessions for non-abusing parents or carers. The guide also includes recommendations for attachment-based interventions, parent-child interaction therapy and trauma-informed group parenting interventions amongst other treatments.
