DESCRIPTION:\n \n \n \n \n This joint talk brings together tw
o qualitative research projects exploring psychoan
alytic work within forensic child and adolescent m
ental health. Drawing on interpretative qualitativ
e methodologies\, the presentations explore how as
pects of harm enter therapeutic and consultative s
paces and how professionals attempt to make sense
of and attempt to contain young people who act out
in this way\, both in direct clinical work and in
work with the professional networks around them.\
n \n \n \n One strand focuses on child psychothera
pists’ experiences of psychotherapeutic work with
young people in contexts of sexual harm\, includin
g situations where young people have both caused h
arm and been harmed themselves. It examines how su
ch work shapes technique and the clinician’s capac
ity to remain engaged and able to think in the fac
e of highly challenging and distressing material.\
 n \n \n \n The other strand explores the use of a
 psychoanalytically informed forensic consultation
model with professionals working with high-risk yo
uth populations. The findings of the study highlig
ht how risk is held within professional networks w
orking with young people who are violent and/or di
splay harmful sexual behaviour\, and how psychoana
lytic thinking can help make sense of what is comm
unicated through these particular forms of acting
 out.\n \n \n \n Together\, the papers consider how
harm is worked with in therapeutic work and profe

that is needed to hold such young people in mind w
ithout foreclosure or reactivity. The talk reflect
s on the implications for forensic practice\, prof
essional support\, and sustaining thinking when wo
rking with forms of violent acting out.\n \n \n \n

\n \n The aim of this bi-monthly forum is to brin

interested in similar topics for potential collabo
ration.\n \n \n \n The research carried out by mem
bers has been spurred by their clinical practice a
